Whitney Elementary School teamed up with Susan G. Komen Foundation in one of its programs, “Passionately Pink for the Cure.” Cancer touches everyone in one way or another, and WES wanted to raise as much money and awareness as possible to help find a cure. On Wednesday, Nov. 5, students and staff wore pink and white to make a stand against cancer and help raise awareness to find a cure.

Food drive sets goal at 55K pounds

WHITNEY - The annual "Food for Families" food drive that re-stocks the shelves of local food pantries returns Friday, Nov. 21. In fact, many area businesses are already accepting donations toward the drive.

"Every donation this month will be weighed and counted toward Whitney’s goal of 55,000 pounds," said local driver organizer Diana Vanwagner. "Cash donations will be converted to five pounds for each $2 donated."

WHITNEY - Stories have been circulating how Barnett Shale companies are taking leases off the table and announcing pullbacks. What exactly is going on in the area?

"The short answer is that we are having a reality check," said Ed Ireland, Ph.D., executive director of the Barnett Shale Energy Education Council, a consortium of 11 of the leading energy companies operating in the Barnett Shale.

Ireland said that natural gas prices rose rapidly compared to historical trends, and the higher prices helped to justify fierce competition among companies bidding for mineral leases, resulting in unsustainably high bonus payments. More recently, falling natural gas prices and the national credit crisis have forced companies to reassess their operations. {more]
